Downloading / Exporting TikTok Chat History

The process for downloading your TikTok data involves two steps.

1. Requesting the Data
2. Downloading the Data

Please note that TikTok’s process for downloading your data advises that this can take up to three days. It is often much quicker, but you may need to allow for this when completing the KidsOnlineSafetyResearch.ie Data Submission Form.

1. Requesting the Data

A. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.

B. Tap the Menu button at the top.

C. Tap Settings and privacy.

D. Tap Account

E. Tap Download your data.

F. Choose TXT and click ‘Request Data’

After you submit your request, TikTok will create a file of your data that you can download from the ‘Download data’ tab. Again, please note that it may take up to 3 days for TikTok to prepare the file for download. During that time your request will show a status of ‘Pending’.

Downloading the Data

Now that you have requested the data, note the ‘Download data’ tab on the same screen. Immediately after you make the request, this will show as ‘Pending’.

To return later and check the status of your data request, simply follow all the steps above from A to E and select ‘Download data’ at the top of the final screen. These steps are summarised below:

A. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
B. Tap the Menu button at the top.
C. Tap Settings and privacy.
D. Tap Account, then tap Download your data.
E. Tap ‘Download data’ at the top. From here, you can see the status of your download. Once your file is ready, it will be available to download for up to 4 days.

F. Saving and Retrieving the Downloaded Data
You can retrieve your file from whatever location you saved it to. Note, on iPhone or Android devices, this will go to your ‘Files’’Downloads’ folder by default.
